New iPhone Rumor

May 30, 2007

With about 3 weeks left before the iPhone is release in the US, the rumor & fan boy sites are starting to get excited about the release.

The latest rumor from MacDailyNews (which got it from a WordPress site with about as many posts as me!!!) is that several features were not mentioned in the release keynote and some features were downplayed.

According to VIM3 (the WordPress site) the iPhone will have:-

  • More memory than 4GB and 8GB
  • User Replacable Battery
  • Wireless N Support
  • Software – variation of iWork
  • iTunes Streaming
  • iTunes Store – download using Wi-Fi internet or if you have internet service through your carrier (AT&T in the USA)
  • Price / AT&T Service Plans – rebate with a 2-year contract and special iPhone plans from AT&T

I guess we’ll find out in 3 weeks time.

Nokia N800

May 28, 2007

We went to Birmingham on Saturday morning, purely with the idea of getting me a new gadget (hey, it was payday and I’d got some vouchers to blow, err I mean spend wisely).

After mooching around the Bullring for about an hour, the choices of gadget were narrowed down to:-

We weighed up the pros and cons of each device (in reality, I was trying to convice my wife!!!).

The Apple TV will probally be great device when Apple finally start to release movies & TV shows in the UK, but until then I won’t be getting one. Also, our requirements are for a slight different device. I’m after some drive space to backup the computers too, as well as store the iTune librarys on. That was going to be a Mac Mini until the rumours started that there were going to be discontinued.

The clock radio is nice, and it will fit my iPod without me taking it out of the case, but I’ve got a birthday comming up, so you never know.

What can I say about the Nintento Wii that hasn’t already been said. My problem is that I don’t think I will get the time to play it. I’ve got an Xbox 360 that hardly ever get used. I know I’m a not a hardcore gamer at heart.

In the end, I went for the Nokika N800. This is such a cool little device. It’s a Linux based internet tablet. It’s got a built in web browser, email client & RSS Reader (although I’m using the Google Reader Mobile so I can read my feeds on my MBP & N800). It can also download new apps directly from the internet.

The spec of the machine is:-

  • Processor: OMAP 2420 running at 330mhz
  • Memory: 128mb of RAM and 256mb of flash memory
  • Operating System: Linux-based Maemo 3.0/Internet Tablet OS 2007
  • Connectivity: IEEE 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 & USB 2.0 high-speed
  • Display & Resolution: 4.1″ 800×480
  • Expansion: 2 x SD card slots, one internal (next to the battery) & one external (under the stand)
  • Camera: built-in webcam (not sure of the resolution, but it ain’t great)
  • Audio: microphone, stereo speakers, FM radio tuner, 3.5mm Headphone jack (compatible with standard stereo headphones, but also containing a fourth pin with microphone input)

The run time is supposed to be 7 hours on my device, and about 10 days on standby. Try getting that from Pocket PC!!! I write up some more thoughs and some photos in the next few days when I’ve had more of a chance to get used to the machine.

All I’ve got to do now is to give it a name…
